How to Fill Your BDSM Toy Box on a Budget

bdsmtoybox
Having the right set of tools is vital for any craftsman and the BDSM craft is no different. The right tools is the difference between a cowboy job or producing spectacular results. Toys complement the natural skill of a Dominant and enhance the experience of submission.

Whether you’re already on the scene and looking to add to your toy box, or you’re a new Domme building their box of tricks, or even a submissive waiting for your Knight with a golden butt plug to come and sweep you off your feet – having the perfect tools for D/s all ready to hand will go a long way in making your experience all the better/kinkier.

That being said not everybody can be the Christian Grey of the kink community and afford a helicopter to hand deliver your flogger with the diamond encrusted handle. Infact most of us mere mortals are required to consciously budget our toy allowance. So here are some top tips to help you fill your BDSM toy box on a budget:

The Box

Your first port of call should be a medium sized box/chest. A cardboard box is fine for temporary use, but you’re going to want something a little sturdier in the long run. A wooden chest (check out car boots/markets) or plastic storage box is ideal. Think of the size of your average crop/cane and aim for a size that will fit. An old suitcase is also a good idea, just be sure no one pops by to lend it and ends up with a shock!

silkscarves

Silk scarves/ties

Versatile, easy to obtain and can be picked up for under a fiver. They can be used as restraints, blindfolds, teasing and all round pleasurable sensations. You could grab a handful from your local charity shop, give them a good soak/wash and they’ll be as good as new.

Blindfold

You can pick these up everywhere from the sleeping masks in your local supermarket or chemist to your novelty items in gift/card shops.

Candles

Standard, white tapered candles are ideal to stock up on. They’re the perfect shape to use as dildos and have the lowest burning temperature for wax play. Old church/table candles are also great for wax play, the chunky, basic coloured kind. Taper-Candle-whiteAvoid scented or elaborately decorated candles as they often have added nasties which can cause irritation to the skin. See 10 Things You Need to Know About Wax Play for more tips on how to use candles safely and effectively.

Pinwheels and pricking tools

pastrypricker
Head straight for the kitchen/baking aisle of your local supermarket and you will find an array of pizza cutters, pastry cutters and pinwheels for airing pastry. They are great for teasing and decorating the beautiful, soft skin of a submissive.

Gloves

glovesAn easy, cheap alternative to expensive fetish items such as vampire/rabbit gloves. Check your nearest Halfords/Petrol Station or the car accessories aisle and you will find furry mitts and chamois mitts that will give you those delicious tickly sensations when brushed over the skin. And for the slightly rougher, scratchy sensation grab a pair of exfoliating/loofah type gloves from the bathroom/beauty section.

Clamps

woodenpegs
Standard clothes pegs are a cheap and easy solution for those who like the sensations (giving or receiving) of clamps. Pegs are versatile, easily accessible and non fiddly. I recommend the wooden kind over plastic as they’re less prone to breakage (especially if you’re whipping them off fast) and feel much nicer too.

Paddles

tabletennisYou can pick up a pair of table tennis paddles for only a few pound in a sports shop/leisure aisle. The kitchen aisle is also worth a look about as many places now do larger pizza oven boards, smaller cheese boards with handles in a range of different materials. You could always get creative and craft your own materials (fur or light sandpaper) to one or both sides using a good quality super glue. The back of a large, paddle style brush is also a classic.

Brushes

hairbrushesBrushes are a perfect addition to any toy box, there are so many types it would be impossible to list them all, from tooth brushes and makeup brushes to puppy brushes and hair brushes. So many different shapes, sizes and textures. Pastry brushes and makeup brushes are soft and seductive where as scrubbing brushes and pet brushes (usually metal bristled) give that harsher sensation. Try mixing the two sensations together to really enliven the skin.

Floggers

floggerThis is a trickier one and will require a little more effort. A good flogger is often lovingly made by a trained hand…and you pay for what you get. If your budget just can’t stretch to that then it is possible to make your own by collecting scraps of suede, both soft and harsh. Again try second hand/charity shops or anywhere that may sell scraps of material.

Crops

Spatulas-editA leather belt is a personal must for any toy box. I would gather a range of belts in different thicknesses, sizes and textures. Of course there’s also the trusty wooden spoon and/or spatula from any well equipped kitchen. The short handled utensils can be especially handy if you’re self-administering your funishments. Rulers also work well, I recommend the shatterproof/wooden kind. I wouldn’t rule out a fly swatter either.

Collar and lead

collarleadThe perfect solution for any pet/sub owner is to head to the local pet shop and stock up on your collars, choker chains, harnesses and leads. The options are practically limitless. If this isn’t particularly your kink though and the collar is more of a symbolic gesture then for temporary subs/a beginner collar then you can pick up a velvet/material style of choker from shops that sell women’s fashion accessories. For the more personal touch and if you’re looking for something you or your sub can wear in public then it’s worth shopping around in jewellery shops/pawnbrokers.

Cuffs and ropes

nylonropewashinglineWe’ve all heard about the boom in the sale of cable ties and rope since the release of Fifty Shades and why the hell not I say. Soft nylon rope is best for the true bondage enthusiast, no scratchy bits and longer lasting. For short-term use, lengths of nylon rope washing line could be used with CAUTION. Cling film is also great for immobilisation. And of course the trusty handcuffs! Handcuffs can be picked up reasonably cheap, though they are usually pink and fluffy…

Sex toys

Sex toys covers a multitude of items I know, but I’m talking specifically about insertion toys – sextoysdildoes, butt plugs, vibrators and bullets. I wouldn’t recommend any DIY alternatives to the real thing. Sometimes you just can’t scrimp on the quality. Although, as mentioned above, tapered candles can be used for insertion and vegetables are also popular (and cheap!) it really is worth investing in a few good toys. Sex toys are so readily available now, delivered discreetly and you can find some great sales/deals online. You could go all out and buy an essential sex toy bundle or customise your own collection and add to it piece by piece.

BATTERIES!

Keep a note of all the different size batteries your toys take and stock up on them whenever you’re out and about and see them on offer. If anything is guaranteed to spoil my mood, it’s running out of batteries mid session!

Safety/First Aid

You’ve stocked your box and you’re ready to play! Not quite…as you know, I’m a stickler for safety and here are a few more items every BDSM toy box should have:
Aloe Vera gel and/or lotion and/or Arnica gel for Aftercarefirstaidkit
Bandage Scissors (for quick, safe release from bondage in and emergency)
A box of latex gloves
Water based lube
Condoms (safe sex and/or to use on sex toys for less cleaning.)
First-Aid Kit

Happy Shopping Kinksters!
